MULCHING FOR PLANT HEALTH
Mulch conserves moisture by protecting the soil from drying out, and has been shown to reduce moisture loss by as much as 21% during the summer months. Mulch also helps to control erosion, and reduces competition between your landscape plantings and grass for water and nutrients. By keeping the soil around your landscape plantings cool, moist and shaded, mulch helps to control the growth of weeds and undesirable grasses which grow better in hot, dry conditions. Mulch can also keep roots cool, helping to prevent root growth from slowing down as temperatures grow higher. Finally, organic mulches can add nutrients to your soil to improve its overall fertility.
PROPER APPLICATION
For best results, planting beds should be cleared of any existing weeds before mulch is applied. Beds should also be edged 3″ to 4″ deep with a sharp spade before mulching. This will stop any nearby turf grass from sending new shoots up through the mulch.
Once applied, the total mulch depth should be no more than 4″, and care should be taken not to pile mulch up against trunks and stems. Diseases are more likely to develop if trunks and stems are subjected to constantly moist conditions.
