History of Brick

Brick is one of humankind's oldest and strongest building materials. A natural material made from sand and clay, fired brick has been used in constructing buildings, creating elegant facades, and paving since about 5000 B.C.

Natural Colors

While brick is a classic, it offers a different look from the concrete pavers which are so popular on Long Island. The bricks for your patio or walkway are available in many different color ranges; today's homeowners are able to choose from orange and pink hues, or build their patio or walkway with traditional red bricks. What's more, because they are naturally colored by mixing different types of clay, brick's color will last longer than concrete's, especially when exposed to sunlight.

Classic Style

Even when bricks chip or crack, they often continue to appear attractive. The deep, warm colors have a very natural and timeless look. Conversely, old, cracked concrete pavers just appear shabby.

Highly Durable and Easy to Maintain

In the past, bricks did not hold up well under the elements and constant use. Today's stronger brick is manufactured to withstand more pressure, which makes the material much more durable, and longer lasting. While bricks might chip or crack over time, they should last for decades – many brick pavers used in streets and pedestrian walkways in the US were installed more than 100 years ago. Clay bricks are very resistant to staining, and will generally require less cleaning than concrete pavers. However, bricks are vulnerable to breaking when faced with excessive ice, vehicle traffic or moisture.

Environmentally Friendly

Since they are made from all-natural materials, bricks have a low impact on the environment. On top of this, bricks can be reclaimed, cleaned and recycled, making them a sustainable choice.

Moderately Priced

While usually more expensive than concrete pavers, brick is still a middle-of-the-road choice economically. A more expensive option is natural blue stone which have a higher acquisition cost (as the stone needs to be dug out from quarries).
