Why Build Retaining Walls on Long Island

Homeowners typically build retaining walls for one of two reasons; Expanding an outdoor living space or replacing an existing failing wall. Careful planning is where to begin

Expanding Your Outdoor Living Space: You Might Need A Retaining Wall

Often times when we come across a project, it requires adhering to the elevation changes a property might have but not noticeable until re-configuring the space. “Why do we need a wall if there is not one there now?” If you are planning to expand your driveway or back patio for example, be sure to check the grade difference in the direction of the new space. It may have been that the lawn area you plan to expand over is higher or lower and that a wall was not needed before. Since a new expansion of any hardscapes should have the same elevations as the existing, it may require retaining soil against the new driveway or just the opposite; will require a solid foundation and support if the grade drops off. The same principle applies to all hardscape elements in the yard. New patio extensions, a new swimming pool and walkways along grade changes will need some support if the area is not level. Even small grade changes can be an issue when properly designing to allow for drainage.

Another example is if your property is noticeably uneven and would be difficult to add a patio or swimming pool without a retaining wall. We would more than likely design the wall to maximize the beauty of both the new living area and maximize the use of your property. Planning and designing before the fact will avoid any costly mistakes.

Replace Or Expand An Existing Retaining Wall

A multi-level look often enhances curb appeal, adds additional outdoor living space and should fit with the surrounding landscaping and the scale of the property. Replacing old tired walls will also increase your property value and will make your property more appealing to prospective buyers. Sometimes replacing a wall is due to safety concerns or a drainage problem is more of a technical reason to which can lead to new re-design.

In hilly and heavily wooded areas like the north shore of Long Island, a retaining wall can be very important in minimizing soil erosion. If the soil in your yard is prone to wind or water erosion, we design and build the best type of wall for your needs. If you are going to make the investment for a new wall, you may as well look at the options for expanding your living space and landscape aesthetics.
